Each patent contains codes of the IPC (International Classification of Patents) assigned by the Examining Office, which indicate in a very detailed tree the technical field to which the invention relates: the IPC divides the technology into eight sections with approximately **70,000** subdivisions. It is a hierarchical system of language-independent symbols for the classification of patents according to the different technological domains to which they belong. This classification being difficult to use, the technological classification used is the simplified classification established by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) which groups the IPC technology classes into 5 technological domains and 35 technological subdomains that correspond to the scope of the invention (not the sector of economic activity).
