Location and description of sites from the BASOL National Base. This database lists polluted sites and soils (or potentially polluted) requiring action by public authorities, either preventively or curatively. Information available on the website of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy (MEDDE) — Directorate-General for Prevention and Risk (DGPR): A polluted site is a site which, as a result of former waste deposition or infiltration of polluting substances, presents a pollution likely to cause a nuisance or a lasting risk to people or the environment. These situations are often due to former summary practices of waste, but also to leaks or spreads of chemicals, accidental or not. There are also contaminations around some sites due to the fallout of atmospheric releases accumulated over the years or even decades. The pollution has a concentrated character, i.e. often high and on a small area (a few tens of hectares at most). It differs from diffuse pollution, such as those caused by certain agricultural practices or the fallout of car pollution near major roads.
