Sites classified in Franche-Comté

Natural monuments and sites whose conservation or preservation presents, from an artistic, historical, scientific, legendary or picturesque point of view, a general interest. Sites can be registered or classified. The classification offers a strong protection by prohibiting, unless special authorisation granted according to the ¨#x27; importance of the work by the Minister in charge of sites or the prefect of department, the execution of any work aimed at modifying or destroying the appearance of the site. A classified site is a site or “natural monument whose conservation or preservation presents an artistic, historical, scientific, legendary or picturesque point of view, a public interest”. The objectives are the conservation or preservation of '' natural or built spaces of particular interest according to the criteria laid down by law (artistic, historical, scientific, legendary or picturesque). The classification provides enhanced protection in comparison with '' inscription, by prohibiting, except for special authorisation, the execution of any work to modify the site;' aspect of the site. L'' initiative to launch the ranking procedure for '' a site belongs either to the Minister or to the regional directorates of the Environment, or to the Departmental Commissions of Sites, Perspectives and Landscapes. The procedure depends on the nature of the owners concerned.
