These are natural sites classified in accordance with the Law of 2 May 1930. the data are up to date in November 2019. the objectives are the conservation or preservation of natural or built-up areas of certain interest in the light of the criteria laid down by law (artistic, historical, scientific, legendary or pittoresque). Sites can be registered or classified. Classification offers enhanced protection by comparison with registration, by prohibiting, unless specifically authorised, any work to change the appearance of the site. the initiative to launch the procedure for the classification of a site lies either with the Minister, the regional directorates for the environment or the departmental committees on sites, prospects and landscapes. The procedure depends on the nature of the owners concerned.
