Within the framework of the SDAGEs, the delimitation of strategic areas or strategic water tables within groundwater bodies, to be preserved for the satisfaction of current and future drinking water needs in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Two different scales of studies must be distinguished: • strategic groundwater body (MESO); • its possible backup zones for the future (ZSF). The purpose of delineating strategic resources and their safeguard areas is to ensure the capacity to meet future needs by mobilising tools adapted to these areas to limit pressures according to their vulnerability(s). Depending on the situation and the stakes, the safeguard zones can be: • surface land necessary for the current and future water recharge of the water body (such as catchment feeding areas...), • surface land allowing the current and future exploitation of this body of water for the PEA (protective perimeters...), • portions of water bodies projected to surface (according to the same principle as for the zones of distribution of waters ZRE). It is important to underline that the characteristics of the tools available will distinguish between two categories of safeguard zones: • the safeguard zones currently operated (ZSE or ZSEA), areas identified as being of interest to the future EPA and which are already used for the EPA. These areas are already often heavily in demand and their alteration would pose problems for the large populations who depend on them. • non-operating backup zones currently (ZSNE or ZSNEA), areas identified as being of interest to the future EPA but which are not already currently used for the EPA. These areas are highly potential and preserved due to their low natural vulnerability or the absence of human pressure and to be kept in the state to meet future needs in the medium and long term.
