Definition
The third place is a translated term from The Third Place (which should not be translated as “third place” but possibly as “third place”1) referring to social environments that come after home and work. This is a thesis developed by Ray Oldenburg2, Professor Emeritus of Urban Sociology at the University of Pensacola, Florida, in his 1989 book: The Great Good Place.
Third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement and other appropriations and space sharing. It is understood as a complementary component, intended for the social life of the community, and relates to spaces where individuals can meet, meet and exchange informally. Oldenburg considers that the third places have begun a phase of decline since the arrival of the streetcar suburbs, in which the sociability rites have disappeared as a result of the use of the automobile3. Michael Krassa supports similar theses by studying neighbourhood configuration, social networking and civic engagement. Oldenburg methodologically approaches Chicago School, which analyses the city as a social laboratory. In his sociology thesis devoted to the subject, Antoine Burret studies the uses, behaviors, reflections and practices that the third place reveals. He draws from his work a conceptual definition of the third place which emphasises “a social configuration in which the encounter between individual entities intentionally commits to the conception of common representations”.
