Dataset description

UNESCO World Heritage is protected by convention from 17 October to 21 November 1972. This heritage is a cultural and natural heritage. The most original feature of the 1972 Convention is to bring together in a single document the concepts of nature protection and the preservation of cultural property. The Convention recognises the interaction between the human being and nature and the fundamental need to preserve the balance between the two. The World Heritage Convention serves to ensure the protection of the natural and cultural heritage of each country of major interest. Each polygon represents all or part of a UNESCO site. In other words, a UNESCO site can be composed of a series of polygons. For example, the site “Chemins de Santiago de Compostela” (code 868) consists of a number of places (Basilica Saint-Just, Dolmen de Pech-Laglaire 2...). Each place is represented by a polygon. __Origin__ In June 2016, a merger of the Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées data sets was carried out. On this occasion, the structuring of the data series has evolved. The UNESCO sites of the Canal du Midi, the fortifications of Vauban and the paths of St-jacques de Compostela are made up of series of polygons. In June 2018, “Chemins de Santiago de Compostela” (code 868 series 072 to 077) are now integrated in polygonal objects throughout their journeys. __Partner organisations__ DREAL Occitanie, <http://whc.unesco.org/fr, > <http://www.sites-vauban.org>
