Urban unit is a commune or a set of municipalities that has a built-up area of at least 2,000 inhabitants in its territory where no dwelling is separated from the nearest of more than 200 meters. In addition, each municipality concerned has more than half of its population in this built-up area.
If the urban unit s' extends over several municipalities, l' all of these municipalities form a multi-municipal agglomeration or urban agglomeration. If the urban unit s' extends to a single municipality, it is called isolated city.
The urban units, dated 2010 were established with reference to the population known in the 2007 census, with a geography as of 01/01/2017.

CLASSPOP (Tranche d' Urban Unit 2014): This code indicates the size slice of the urban unit to which the municipality belongs according to the 2014 population census.

1 Municipality belonging to an urban unit of 2,000 to 4,999 inhabitants
2 Municipality belonging to an urban unit of 5,000 to 9,999 inhabitants
3 Municipality belonging to an urban unit of 10,000 to 19,999 inhabitants
4 Municipality belonging to an urban unit of 20,000 to 49,999 inhabitants
5 Municipality belonging to an urban unit of 50,000 to 99 999 inhabitants
6 Municipality belonging to an urban unit of 100,000 to 199 999 inhabitants
7 Municipality belonging to an urban unit of 200 000 to 1 999 999 inhabitants
8 Municipality belonging to the urban unit of Paris

1 — Isolated city or single-municipal urban unit
2 — Intra-Departmental Agglomeration
3 — Inter-Departmental Agglomeration
4 — Interregional Agglomeration
5 — International Agglomeration
NB_COM: Number of municipalities in the urban unit (Attention, some urban units; extend to neighbouring departments)

The zones are created by aggregation of the municipalities of the same urban unit.
