At sea, events may disrupt navigation safely: wreckage, lost buoy, broken lighthouse, military fire etc. The IMO (International Maritime Organisation) and the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) require the signatory states of the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea) to identify and disseminate potential hazards to navigation in the waters under their responsibilities. This information is called navigational warnings in international conventions and “urgent notices to navigators” (abbreviated in AVURNAV) in France.
The diffusion of these AVURNAVs in France is ensured at sea by VHF, in particular by semaphores, after calling on channel 16 or on the frequency 2 182 kHz, NAVTEX or Inmarsat. These opinions can also be consulted in the harbour masters and on the sites of the maritime prefects.
This dataset lists:
— an API to access these current AVURNAVs in real time;
— a history of the AVURNAVs that have been issued.
