Dataset description
At the end of the First World War, the City of Nancy built a monument dedicated to soldiers who died for France during these four years of conflict. On this building, located in the cemetery of the South, near a military square, the names of the Nancéiens who died for France have never been recorded.
It is to honour the memory of these thousands of soldiers and to transmit to future generations the greatness of their sacrifice, that the City of Nancy wished to initiate the census of its dead for France.
A website has been set up: http://memorial.nancy.fr, in order to make these heroes known. Individual sheets were made to illustrate the journey of these men. Each of these records includes the civil status of the victims, their rank, the unit to which they belonged, their place of birth, their last residence (if known) and, depending on the case, their photographic portrait. However, their content depends on the sources reached to date.
This approach, initiated on the occasion of the commemorations of the Centenary of the Great War, will be continued until the most recent conflicts, in order to bring to this memorial approach the unity that will give it all its meaning.
Pursuant to the law of 28 February 2012, requesting the inscription of the names of the dead for France on monuments to municipal deaths, the dead, military or civilian, included in this list must be native to Nancy or have resided there before their death. They must also have received the mention “Death for France”, created by the law of 2 July 1915, which honors the memory of the victims of war.
The data proposed below present for each soldier the name of the conflict, the name of the soldier, the first names, the grade, the body, the registration number and the related office, the date of birth, the department of birth, the commune of birth, the date of death, the country of death, the department of death, the commune of death and the mention as death for France.
