Continental Ecological, Faunistic and Florist Focus Areas ZNIEFF — Type 1
The National Survey for the Inventory of Natural Areas of Ecological, Faunistic and Florist Interest (ZNIEFF) was conducted from 1982 to 1995.
Building on the state of the natural spaces with high heritage value, and aware that nature is constantly changing, a modernisation survey was launched in 1997 (for the regions responding to the original survey at the earliest) and is due to be completed in 2012.
Once completed, the new investigation replaces and cancels the previous one. Generally and respectively designated as first and second generation surveys, the modus operandi of the future new survey will evolve towards a permanent and continuous inventory, updating information on existing areas while allowing the possible description of new areas.
The website of the National Inventory of Natural Heritage (INPN) already incorporates this announced change. It displays the inventory of first generation ZNIEFFs for regions that have not completed the survey for the compilation of the second generation ZNIEFF inventory. It displays the inventory of second generation ZNIEFFs and any updates to this new inventory, for regions that have already completed their modernisation survey.
The national inventory map of continental ZNIEFFs integrates this generational element by distinguishing between the first generation and the second generation inventory, always distinguishing, within each generation, type 1 areas (delimited on the basis of a single large type of ecological environment) and type 2 areas (delimited on the basis of ecological assemblages, in a concept of general natural functioning and landscapes).
Dates of completion of the first generation national survey: 1982-1995
First generation contour digitisation dates (regional files): 1985-1992 (minor corrections until 1995)
Dates of completion of the second generation national survey: 1997-2012
Second generation contour digitisation dates (regional files): 1999-2012
Merging regional files under ArcInfo (constitution national layer): 2011
There are no ZNIEFF1-sea and ZNIEFF2-sea in the Basque Country (areas of ecological interest, faunistic and floristic in the marine environment).
