Surface objects of areas designated as vulnerable to diffuse pollution by nitrates of #x27; agricultural origin, taking into account in particular the characteristics of land and water as well as of #x27; all available data on the nitrate content of waters and their zone of #x27; feeding.
These areas concern:
— waters affected by pollution: groundwater and surface fresh water, in particular water for human consumption, with a nitrate content exceeding 50 milligrams per litre; estuary waters, coastal and marine waters, surface fresh waters which have undergone eutrophication likely to be eutrophic; be effectively combated by reducing nitrogen inputs;
— waters threatened by pollution: groundwater and surface fresh water, in particular water for human consumption, with a nitrate content of between 40 and 50 milligrams per litre, showing an upward trend; estuary waters, coastal and marine waters, surface freshwaters whose main characteristics show a tendency towards eutrophication likely to be combated effectively by reducing nitrogen inputs.
Nitrate-vulnerable zones arise from the application of the Directive &nitrates" which concerns the prevention and reduction of nitrates of agricultural origin. This 1991 Directive obliges each Member State to delimit vulnerable areas; where the waters are polluted or likely to be polluted by nitrates of agricultural origin. They are defined on the basis of the results of monitoring the nitrate content of surface and groundwater fresh water.
__Origin__
The source data is the list of municipalities with classification/not classified in TRDP mentioned in Decree No. 94-1139 of 26 December 1994 defining priority rural development territories.
Their geographical transcription, i.e. the creation of territories by concatenation of neighbouring municipalities of the same type, uses the common layer of \#x27; a reference framework of administrative boundaries (BD Carto, GeoFLA...).
