French watercourse dataset BD topage® version 2022
There is no standardised definition of what a watercourse is. The codification of watercourses is the responsibility of the managers of the repository (Water Agencies, in consultation with IGN-OFB-State).
Coding choices are essentially influenced by a topographical approach, based on field toponymy where it exists. The criteria of drain length, flow rates, flow permanence can be used, in the absence of clear and convergent sources on the toponymy.
One of the founding roles of the repository for the water information system is to propose identification of hydrographic objects in the form of stable, consensual codes that can be used to produce and maintain derived repositories, or to hang up business data (Sewage storage, etc.)
The choice of watercourse is generally not influenced by one of these particular uses, sometimes contradictory between them.
Note: The management of transboundary watercourses is as follows:
— Case of rivers located on the border (frontier): its geometry will be integrated in its entirety;
— Case of rivers crossing the border once: a common cross-border node will be shared between the two countries (pending clear border delimitations);
— Cases of rivers making round trips between the two countries: the geometry of the latter will be fully integrated for the part between its first and last A/R on the border (even for the part in the neighbouring country).
Corresponds to Inspire’s Watercourse concept.
