This dataset represents the borders of the world’s main oceans and seas. The source of the limits is the publication ‘Limits of Oceans & Seas, Special Publication No 23’ published by the IHO in 1953. The dataset was carried out by Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ).
NB: The Austral Ocean is not included in the IHO publication and its boundaries are discussed in the scientific community. Flanders Marine Institute recognised the controversy about this topic, but decided to include the Austral Ocean in the dataset, which is often used by scientists working in this field.
