The geological-geotechnical 3D model of the quaternary underground of the city of Göttingen was constructed between 2004 and 2009 as part of a cooperation between the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology and the Geosciences Centre of the University of Göttingen. A 54 km² area was considered in the Leine Valley, which includes the densely populated area of the city district of Göttingen and the northern part of the municipality of Rosdorf. In this 3D model, information from more than 3000 holes as well as geological, soil and geomorphological maps are combined. The geologically complex structure of the quaternary subsurface of Göttingen — characterised by the quaternary deposition conditions, salt tectonics and subrosion processes — is comprehensible with the simplified but contradictory 3D modeling.
