The 1:50,000 scale map (BK50) provides an overview of the distribution of soil and soil-forming substrates for the entire state area of Rhineland-Palatinate. The surface is depicted up to a depth of two meters. Due to the scale, the legend units of the soil map are composed of soil form societies (BFG), which are described via several utilisation-differentiated soil forms (BF). The guiding soil form is the soil form, which has the largest proportion of land in a BFG. Its designation is also the name of the BFG: The usable field capacity of a soil is the part of the field capacity available for vegetation. It contains the amount of water that a groundwater remote site can withhold in natural storage after sufficient saturation against gravity and, according to the convention, corresponds to a suction voltage of pF 1.8 to 4.2.
