The data base of the biotope mapping Bavaria reflects the results of a systematic, Bavarian-wide collection and description of near-natural habitats (biotopes) in Bavaria. It thus provides a comparable overview of the location, distribution, frequency and condition of the valuable and conservable biotopes in Bavaria. The biotope mapping Bavaria is divided into four areas: the “biotope mapping (flatland)” outside the Alps and cities, the “biotope mapping (alpine)”, the “biotope mapping (city)” and the “biotope mapping (military)” within military properties. The beginning of the biotope mapping of Bavaria on a measurement scale of 1:5,000 was in 1984. Since 1993, no biotopes have been mapped within forests. Since 1985, around 4 % of the land area has been mapped as biotopes in Bavaria outside the Alps. Most of the biotopes covered are protected under §30 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) and Article 23 of the Bavarian Nature Conservation Act (BayNatSchG).
