As part of the implementation of the EU-WFD, the restoration of ecological continuity in natural flowing water systems is of primary importance.
Therefore, within the River Basin Community (FGG) Elbe, supraregional priority waters were initially designated in 2009 (GAUMERT et al. 2009), the continuity of which is particularly essential for long distance migratory species, such as eel, sturgeon, salmon, sea trout, sea and river nine-eye, North Sea beaks or maize.
The state of Brandenburg initially accounts for six waters.
The selection and definition of regional priority waters was carried out in 2009 by the Brandenburg Environment Agency and was validated and supplemented in particular with fish-ecological requirements within the framework of the state concept.
In the update of the state concept of 2012 and 2016, a detailed survey of all transverse structures in priority waters has been carried out. Furthermore, concrete structural proposals for the production of ecological continuity on all structures in priority waters are included.
