Definition:
The Morphological Drive is a measure that can be used to detect extreme events in an area over a longer period of time. A low value indicates that changes in altitude between the individual time steps of the bathymetrics of the study area were rather steady (for example, slow sedimentation of the wadding), a high value indicates short-term and large differences between the individual time steps (e.g. erosion by a rapidly migrating gutter system). The morphological drive is as a measure independent of the absolute height differences, so that deviations from the trend can be reliably detected both in a system with small changes and in a system with regular large changes.
Data generation:
The basis for bathymetric products are gridded bathymetric models, which are created using the Functional Ground Model, a data-based hindcast simulation model, via spatial-time interpolation methods from a database of sea and land surveys of various data types. For each year from 1996 to inclusive 2016, a gridded bathymetric model in 10 m resolution for the German Bay and in addition in 250 m resolution for the Exclusive Economic Zone for the year 1996 is produced. Since it is an evaluation of several time steps, the morphological drive cannot be determined for the Exclusive Economic Zone. For the German Bay, the morphological drive is calculated for each node by calculating the difference in altitude at that node over the 21-year period between two consecutive years and by determining the range, i.e. the difference between maximum and minimum value. Since it is an evaluation of several time steps, the morphological drive cannot be determined for the Exclusive Economic Zone.
Product:
10 m grid of the German Bay, wherein the value of the morphological drive is stored at each raster node over the period 1996 to 2016. The product is provided in GeoTiff format.
