The Biosphere Reserve “Lower Saxony Elbtalaue” is part of the UNESCO
1997 recognised, cross-border biosphere reserve river landscape Elbe. It was established by the Law on the Biosphere Reserve of Lower Saxony Elbtalaue on 23 November 2002 with a total area of 56.760 ha.
The biosphere reserve “Lower Saxony Elbtalaue” extends 100 kilometres southeast of Hamburg on a length of about 80 km on the northeastern edge of the state of Lower Saxony (see Figure 4-1) along the Elbe between Schnackenburg in the east and Hohnstorf (Elbe) in the west (electricity km 472.5 at Schnackenburg to 569 near Lauenburg). The Biosphere Reserve includes parts of the Lüchow-Dannenberg districts and
Lüneburg.
