According to the Surface Water Ordinance (OGewV) 2016 (https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/ogewv_2016/BJNR137310016.html), general physico-chemical quality components should be used for classification in accordance with the ecological assessment of flowing waters based on biological quality components according to the EC Water Framework Directive (WRRL). Annex 7 makes, inter alia, allocations between river types and fish communities and describes fish ecological temperature requirements for the management objectives depending on the fish communities.
In order to implement these requirements, the Baden-Wuerttemberg flowing water landscape was characterised in 2020 on the basis of the natural temperature requirements of the fish species and their proportions in the reference fish census in relation to the fish communities that colonised them.
The classification is carried out by the Fisheries Research Centre in Langenargen (https://lazbw.landwirtschaft-bw.de/pb/,Lde/Startseite/Themen/Fischgemeinschaft%2Bnach%2BOGewV). A detailed explanation of the classification can be found in the corresponding report, which is linked on the website.
The topic “fish community” is based on the Official Digital Water Management Network (AWGN) as of May 2019. If necessary, this may result in deviations from the annual updated AWGN.
