Near-surface geothermal energy The realisation opportunities of smaller and larger geothermal projects are growing with the broadest possible knowledge of underground conditions. For this reason, DG NRW has developed the geothermal potential study NRW on behalf of the Landesinitiative Zukunftsenergien. The results are published on the Geothermal CD-ROM. The following information can be requested: Underground construction and groundwater conditions up to 100 m depth Geothermal yield of the substrate up to 100 m depth Possible restrictions for geothermal uses (water protected areas, areas with artesian tensioned groundwater, areas with higher methane levels in the subsoil, etc.) With the help of these data, the potential applications of geothermal energy at any location in NRW can be assessed. At the same time, the available data form an important basis for optimal plant planning. Deep geothermal energy In July 2002, the “Geothermal Study Ruhrgebiet” was launched at GD NRW. As part of this second geothermal study, which covers large parts of the Ruhr area and the adjacent Lower Rhine, the geothermal potential assessment will consequently be continued to a realistic utilisation depth of about 5 000 m for large geothermal installations. This study has a model character for other regions. Users of the Ruhr area geothermal study will be primarily future-oriented industrial and service companies. Pioneering geothermal energy concepts are to be presented to them.
