Maps of Historical Land Use in Lower Saxony 1: 25 000 show the condition before and at the beginning of the great cultivation measures of the 20th century. In order to be able to obtain as accurate and interpretable statements as possible on historical land use, the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) evaluates old topographic maps from the period of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century.
The LBEG adapts the displayed land uses into the current topographies and keeps them available for further evaluations after digital recording in the database.
From these data on land use at that time, evidence of soil development can be obtained as well as the distribution of wetlands or bogs reconstructed.
