The topographic maps were taken from 1789 to 1796 under the direction of Major Gustav Adolf von Varendorf by officers of the Schleswig infantry regiment. The original scale is 1:26.293. The cards were reproduced in a scale of 1:25,000 in 68 partial cards. The Atlas includes all 68 sub-maps and also shows an overview map. All cards can be removed from the Atlas due to the book fitting. Unlike the single cards, the maps of the Atlas do not contain any legend. This legend is attached to the Atlas as a single sheet. Furthermore, the Atlas contains a foreword by Prof. Kahlfuß, which informs about the formation of the maps. The historical maps are contemporary cultural witnesses of cartography and in particular reflect the political distribution of power. The historically interested user of the map can easily get a picture of the prevailing power of the country and the subsequent developments. The map representation is unusual compared to today’s cards. This mainly includes compliance with an odd scale. The reason for this is the conversion of rod, cubit or foot dimensions. Furthermore, the maps were mainly used for the military purposes of the respective sovereign.
