As part of the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, the first-time and further description of the Rhineland-Palatinate groundwater body represents an inventory of the subsoil of river basins in Rhineland-Palatinate with the aim of capturing those groundwater bodies for which there is a risk of not achieving the environmental objectives set out in Article 4 of the EU WFD. The basis of the description is the Hydrogeological Overview Map of Germany (HÜK 200). It was established in 2001 by the State Geological Services of Germany (SGD) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials (BGR) in scale 1: 200 000 worked out in the sheet sections of TK 200.
