The geographical data on soil cover was established by the Federal Statistical Office on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and in close cooperation with the Federal Environment Agency. It was based on a methodological framework developed by the EU based on the evaluation of satellite images for the survey of soil cover species. It is based on the European Communities’ CORINE (Coordination of INformation on the Environment) programme. Spatial data for soil cover are available as grid and vector data.
It was first recorded in 44 land use classes, 37 of which are relevant in Germany.
