Healing water is one of the classic natural remedies. It originates from underground water resources and, depending on their origin, has a natural content of minerals and trace elements. Establishments of protected areas of healing springs are intended to protect nationally recognised healing springs from adverse effects. Qualitative protection zones are designated to protect against interference from substance inputs. It is usually subdivided into zones I-III, as is the case with drinking water protection areas. In the case of older protected areas, there are also zones IV and V. In this map layer, the designated sanctuary reserves are shown. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the district governments are responsible for the establishment of water protection areas according to their territorial competence.
