The map of the original moor spread of Lower Saxony shows the maximum extent of the moors in Lower Saxony’s lowlands. The map work depicts the distribution of low bogs, small bogs and high bogs based on historical maps. The designation of the bogs in the map of the original moor spreading took place to a considerable extent according to vegetation, i.e. geobotanically or partly by land name and does not correspond to the geological definition of bogs. For the map of the original moor spread, the vegetation, which has been depicted on historical maps since the 18th century, has been evaluated, regardless of peat power. In contrast, in other geological maps Moore is only represented with a peat power of at least 0.3 m. Solely because of the different definitions of the moor term, the bog area in the map of the original moor spread is therefore larger than in the other geological maps of the LBEG.
