On Friday, November 8, typhoon Haiyan (category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale) met in the Philippines at 4:40 am local time. With wind speeds of more than 300 km/h, the typhoon moved across the islands of Samar and Leyte in the west-northwest direction, triggering numerous storm surges that caused large-scale destruction. According to official estimates, thousands of people died, hundreds of thousands became homeless.The map shows the population distribution in the northern part of the island of Cebu and includes the administrative regions of Daanbantayan and Medellin. Population data for 2010 were obtained from asiapop (www.asiapop.org).The number of inhabitants per municipality is presented in tabular form. Please note that small white areas in the map are created by combining different data sources.
