Dataset description

Digital national overview map of the geometries of all EU bird sanctuaries, FFH areas and nature reserves in Lower Saxony. According to Article 4 of the EC Birds Directive (79/409/EEC), Member States (in the Federal Republic of Germany the federal states) are obliged to declare the most suitable areas for area and number for species listed in Annex I to the Directive (Article 4(1)) and for migratory species (Article 4(2)) as special protected areas (BSG, European Bird Conservation Areas) and to notify the European Commission as part of the ecologically networked Natura 2000 conservation area system. The EC Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (FFH) requires each Member State to designate areas for a coherent ecological network of protected areas. The digital map shows all the reported FFH sites for Lower Saxony, including those already identified by the EU Commission as ‘Treaties of Community Importance’ (SCIs). The national overview map of the geometries of all Lower Saxony nature reserves contains the protected areas designated by the Lower Nature Authorities on a generalised scale (1:25000). Without exception, the boundaries and area indications in the respective ordinances or laws of the protected areas are legally binding.
