Protected landscape components are an instrument of property protection. As a special feature, however, the category has elements of surface protection. Thus, both individual objects as well as object groups (e.g. avenues) or objects with an area-like extension (e.g. village ponds, orchards) can be protected.
In accordance with Section 29(1) of the BNatSchG, protected landscape components (GLB) are legally binding parts of nature and landscape whose special protection is required.
