The map shows the sampling locations for monitoring radioactivity in so-called “vegetable indicators”. These are plants or parts of plants (e.g. leaves, moss, grass) that can indicate very sensitive contamination of environmental media such as soil, water or air from radioactive substances (“contamination”). The data is collected as part of the Integrated Measurement and Information System (IMIS) by the Länder on behalf of the Federal Government (see [http://www.bfs.de/DE/themen/ion/notfallschutz/messnetz/imis/imis_node.html]. The points shown represent the respective administrative unit (municipality).
