Dataset description
Soils that are particularly worthy of protection include soils whose natural functions and their archival function are essentially preserved. Damage to these functions is to be avoided under soil protection law (cf. §1 BBodSchG. Soils of natural history or geoscientific importance provide insight into soil developments in earlier eras and thus provide information, e.g. on climate or vegetation conditions of the past. The methods for determining the protection of soils in Lower Saxony are detailed in Bug et al. (2019) described. The basis of the evaluations are the soil map of Lower Saxony 1: 50 000 (BK50) and the Digital Landscape Model (DLM25) from LGLN.
