The indicator is a measure of the technical overprinting of the landscape by wind turbines (WKA). In addition, there are aesthetic effects of the systems due to their visibility over long distances. The use of wind power can affect birds and bats through disturbances and by increasing mortality (Hötker et al. 2005). According to studies, wind turbines also have positive effects on certain breeding bird species. These are presumably caused by secondary effects such as habitat changes or agricultural use in the immediate vicinity of the WKA. Especially collision-prone for birds are wind farms on wetlands and on bare mountain ridges. Forest sites of WKA are particularly risky for bats. Germany is expected to see a significant gradient in wind turbine density from north to south. For more information, visit http://www.ioer-monitor.de/index.php?id=44&ID_IND=E01DG.
