According to the Convention on Wetlands, in particular as a habitat for aquatic and wading birds of international importance (Ramsar Convention), the States Parties designate “Wetlands of International Importance” (FiB) which must meet established criteria.
For the territory of today’s state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, four FiBs were designated by the GDR against UNESCO on 31 July 1978.
The limits of the FiB were established in 2000 by the Institute for Geodata Processing on the basis of a digitalisation template of the LUNG M-V in scale 1: 50,000 digitised.
