The term hemerobie derives from the Greek words hémeros (tamed, cultivated) and bíos (living). The hemerobie represents the totality of all human interventions in the natural balance and can be understood as an inverse measure of closeness to nature when anthropogenic interventions are reversible. Land use or land cover shall be assigned values of the following 7-level hemerobie classification: — Level 1: ahemobic (not culturally influenced), — Stage 2: oligohemerob (weak culturally influenced), — Level 3: mesohemerob (moderately influenced by culture), — Stage 4: beta-euhemobic (moderately strongly influenced), — Level 5: Alpha-euhemerobic (highly culturally influenced), — Level 6: polyhemerobic (very strongly influenced by culture) and — level 7: metahemerobic (excessively strongly influenced by culture/biocenosis destroyed). On the basis of this indicator, overall statements on the quality of anthropogenic land use are possible (as opposed to sectoral indicators).
