The indicator determines the area share of the undeveloped northern floodplain, which is still available for flood retention, in relation to the morphological floodplain. Recent floodplains have a high social significance, because the risk of flooding poses a direct threat to human lives. Repeated flooding or the risk alone can significantly reduce the quality of life. In addition, immense economic damage can occur. The avoidance of high water through natural support in the floodplain also contributes to the avoidance of significant costs of technical protection measures. Floodplains fulfil other ecosystem services such as supply services (grassland use, livestock for food production, contribution to drinking water production), water/groundwater protection, cultural services (area for recreation in the floodplain, landscape quality, aesthetics) and biodiversity.
