The reference yield defined in the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) is a good measure for assessing the suitability of a site for the operation of wind turbines. By the end of 2011, an annual yield for the wind turbine(s) at the site of at least 60 % in relation to a reference location defined in the EEG was a prerequisite for electricity remuneration under the EEG. This limit is still a guideline for the minimum wind opening that a location should provide. Depending on the system type, tower height and altitude of the site above sea level, an average annual wind speed of about 5.3 m/s to 5.5 m/s in 100 m/s is required to reach this minimum yield threshold.
The reference maps show the areas where wind turbines can generate at least 60 % and 80 % of the EEG reference yield.
