With the publication of the digital city model in the 3. Dimension will finally be able to experience and plan Cologne in 3D.
The use of 2D and 3D geoinformation allows the plastic visualisation of contemporary history as well as the planning of future urban development projects.
In the environmental sector, 3D city models enable, among other things, the simulation of noise and exhaust propagation as well as predictions about possible changes in the urban climate. In disaster situations such as floods, in the presence of 3D landscape models, it can be quickly determined which areas and buildings will be affected, so that appropriate measures can be initiated at an early stage.
Currently, the underlying data base is still referring to 2010, but will be updated later this year. Nevertheless, there is already the possibility to experience the entire city area in 3D. In total, around 350,000 buildings and special buildings, such as the cathedral, the Rhine bridges or the Romanesque churches are already available. The area shown covers approximately 409 square kilometers.
