On Germany’s motorways and extraneous federal roads, all vehicles are permanently counted at automatic counting points. Depending on the type of device used, up to nine vehicle types can be distinguished.
The data is collected by the federal states and transmitted to BASt on a quarterly basis. On this basis, annual driving performance and average daily traffic strengths (DTV) are calculated. The data form an important basis for transport or construction decisions and measures
