Dataset description

Fritz Zapp Professional architectural and urban photography photographs of Cologne 1910-1915 from the Rheinisches Bildarchiv of the city of Cologne Fritz Zapp Professional architectural and urban photography photographs of Cologne 1910-1915 from the Rheinisches Bildarchiv of the city of Cologne Fritz Zapp was born on 13 March 1882 in Kleinbliersbach, Bergische Land. He first studied and worked as a painter and painter before moving to the nearby Hoffnungsthal in 1910. There he opened a modern studio for photography and painting. When he died on 11 February 1960, he left behind an extensive complex of historical photographs of his immediate surroundings. About 8,000 glass plates, various individual pictures and planned films were received by the History Association Rösrath and were among others under the title "100 years ago... Rösrath, Hoffnungsthal and Forsbach in view of the photographer Fritz Zapp, with excursions to Cologne and the Bergische Land" published. In the same year, the Rheinische Bildarchiv acquired a small batch of 164 glass negatives in the formats 13 by 18 centimeters and 18 by 24 centimeters with their rights. The photographs were taken between 1910 and 1915 and mainly document the foundational architectures of the Rhine metropolis Cologne, which were destroyed in the bomb hail of the Second World War. Street views, residential and commercial buildings along the newly created rings and from the newly built suburbs such as Neuehrenfeld were among the preferred motifs of the Zapp autodidact. But also representative church buildings of the old town were photographed by him.
