Dataset description

Blatt Passau shows an interesting excerpt of geology in the border triangle Germany Austria Czech Republic. The northeast corner of the map sheet is taken by the Moldanubic of the Bohemian Mass. Parts of the Bohemian Forest and the Bavarian Forest are open-minded. The metamorphic rocks of the Moldanubic (Gneise, Diatexite) are intensified by paleozoic plutonites. These are mostly granites (Hauzenberg, Kristall-, Haidmühle-, Eisgarn-, Sulzberg-, Steinberg-, Dreisessel-, Weinsberg-, Schärding-, Peuerbach-Granite), while Diorite only occasionally occurs. Two major disturbance zones, Bavarian pile and Passau stake, pass through the area in the northwest-southeast direction. The largest area in the map section is the Molasse Basin of the Alpine Foreland. The rubble of the Alps is filled with tertiary sediments of freshwater, brackish water or sea molasses. The tertiary is partly superimposed by pleistocene loosers sediments such as gravel of meltwater flows or loess and loess clay. In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, genesis and petrography of the represented units, a tectonic overview map illustrates the geological units in the map sheet. In an overlay scheme, all overlays are also listed and described in detail. A geological section that crosses the Molasse Basin from south to north provides additional insights into the construction of the subsurface. In the course of the profile it becomes clear that the tertiary sediment layers continue to lose thickness northwards.
