Iodine tablet output

The Aachen Region (City of Aachen, StadtRegion Aachen, Kreis Düren, Kreis Euskirchen and Kreis Heinsberg) is within 100 kilometres (outer zone) of the Tihange nuclear power plant (Belgium). The Radiation Protection Commission recommends the distribution of iodine tablets for areas of the external zone in the event of the release of radioactive iodine as a result of a reactor accident. In such a case, iodine tablets in sufficient numbers are stored in the outlets mentioned here. IMPORTANT: Iodine tablets should not be taken as a precautionary measure, but only at the request of the Civil Protection Agency. Function of iodine tablets: Iodine tablets are intended to prevent accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland in the event of radioactivity, thereby avoiding damage to health. Radioactive iodine has the same chemical and biological properties as the natural iodine found in the food and is therefore stored in the thyroid like normal non-radioactive iodine. If tablets with a high concentration of non-radioactive iodine are taken in time, the thyroid gland is saturated with this “healthy” iodine and can no longer absorb radioactive iodine (so-called “iodine blockade”) According to the recommendations of the Radiation Protection Commission, persons up to and including 45 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding persons (independent of age) are the target group for taking iodine tablets. Adults aged 46 and over should not take iodine tablets thereafter, as the health risk for severe thyroid diseases as a result of tablet intake is higher than the risk of disease arising from the uptake of radioactive iodine. However, this group of people can have a medical examination individually whether protection with iodine tablets or the drug irnate is possible.
