The dataset contains the names and terms of the mayors of the city of Düsseldorf since 1949.
The state capital Düsseldorf currently has a full-time mayor as a district-free city. He is also head of the administration.
Until 1994 there was the so-called municipal double peak, which was introduced after the Second World War by the British occupying power.
It consisted of the honorary mayor as chairman of the Council and the head of the city as head of the administration and representative of the municipality in all legal and administrative matters.
After the abolition of the double head, the Lord Mayor was elected by the Council.
The local elections in 1999 were the first direct election of the mayor of the full-time by the citizens for a term of six years. The term of office was shortened from six to five years by the Law on Strengthening Local Democracy of 9 April 2013. From 2020, the Lord Mayor’s election will be linked to the elections of the Council.
The mayor may be represented by the honorary mayors in the management of the Council meetings and in representation. For all other tasks, the mayor is represented as head of administration to the City Director.
