The mosaic in a luxurious city villa of Roman Cologne from the Roman-Germanic Museum of Cologne
In the shadow of the cathedral, in the heart of Cologne, under the eyes of millions of visitors, it lies at the original location — the Dionysos mosaic. This 70 m² magnificent floor adorned the ballroom of a villa in Roman Cologne.
The wine god Dionysus celebrates here with his entourage: Satyrs and males play music — flute, tambourin or the lyre — and they dance with it. Animals such as ducks, parrots and a peacock also accompany the festive activity. Tasty oysters are ready and the baskets bend under the cherries.
One would like to know what happened here 2000 years ago — the figures of the mosaic could certainly tell a lot. If only they could be brought to life.
