With the nature conservation re-evaluation of the bogs, the bog protection programme was extended in 1994. During the re-evaluation, all 92 high bogs with industrial peat mining were assessed in terms of their current importance for nature conservation. In addition, due to its importance as a buffer zone and independent habitat for plants and animals dependent on wet grassland and its function for biotope crosslinking, agricultural high bog grassland was also included in the Moor Protection Programme for the first time. Information is available about areas that are valuable from a country-wide perspective for nature conservation outside the areas with mining permits.
