Definition:
Traditionally, immigration to Germany is recorded through nationality. In the meantime, however, this criterion is too short. Thus, emigrants already receive German nationality upon entry, but also growing parts of the formerly foreign population have meanwhile accepted German citizenship, so that the delimitation by nationality no longer applies here either. Starting from the 2005 microcensus, the possibility of a person’s migration status is given. For this purpose, in addition to the nationality and immigration status of the person himself, the relevant information of his/her parents is also collected.
According to the definition of the migration background according to § 4(1) of the Participation and Integration Act of 14 February 2012 (GV.NRW.S.97), people with a migrant background are:
—Persons of foreign nationality, or
—persons born abroad and immigrated after 1949; or
—Persons in whom at least one parent has immigrated.
Persons whose assignment to the population with a migrant background results solely on the basis of characteristics of a non-domestic parent can only be identified as persons with a migrant background within the microcensus every four years. Thus, in the corresponding years, the proof of the population with a migrant background is increased compared to the other years.
Note:
Further data on the population with a migrant background in North Rhine-Westphalia can be found on the Internet portal of the Integration Report of the Ministry of Labour, Integration and Social Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia
Note on the revision of the results for 2011 and 2012:
The extrapolation framework for the microcensus has been changed: Until the 2010 survey year, the extrapolation is based on the updated results of the 1987 census, from 2011 onwards on the updated results of the 2011 census. The update for the 2013 survey year revised the results for 2011 and 2012.
