The postcards from Album 188 show motifs of the Imperial Navy, especially battleships, liner ships, coastal tanks and submarines during manoeuvres on the high seas. In addition, about three dozen postcards give a (staged) insight into the crew’s onboard life. Among the more than 300 illustrations are portraits of high officials of the naval forces of the German Empire, including influential admirals and lieutenants.
The picture postcards have been popular since the beginning of the 20th century, and not only among the sailors serving on the ships. They were also a promising medium to inspire the population for German fleet policy and to demonstrate the strength of the German navy.
