The data set contains the names and tenures of the Oberstadt Directors of the City of Düsseldorf from 1945 to 1994. Until 1994, the Oberstadt Director was the head of the administration and representative of the municipality in all legal and administrative matters. It was part of the so-called municipal double-head, which was introduced after the Second World War by the British occupying power. It consisted of the Oberstadt Director with his duties and the honorary mayor as Chairman of the Council. In 1994, the Oberstadt Director was abolished and the duties were transferred to the mayor elected by the Council.
