The identification of cartilage or legend units of the soil geological map of Thuringia in scale 1: 100,000 (BGK 100) follows a soil form concept as an essential structure element, which takes into account substrate classification (systematics of the soil forming substrate as a counterpart to soil classification) and soil typology (or soil classification) and summarises them as a soil form in one term (e.g. Löß-Black Earth). The mapping units thus represent surface units of complex soil form societies in order to meet the map scale of 1:100,000 as well as the diverse soil conditions of Thuringia.
